Your milk recording sample contains much more than just milk. There is also a vast amount of information that can be useful for improving performance and reducing production costs. KETOLAB lets us measure the risk of ketosis using your cow’s milk recording sample.

What is the KETOLAB service?

KETOLAB is a new process, exclusive to the Valacta laboratory, which allows us to use your milk recording sample to measure ketone bodies in the milk. (The results are included in your reports).

What are Ketone Bodies?

When animals draw on their fat reserves as a source of energy, they produce ketone bodies. The presence of excess ketone bodies can lead to ketosis.

The average costs arising from ketosis on a farm are estimated at $6,000 per year.

Ketosis is an illness that frequently occurs at the beginning of lactation. In Quebec, around 30% of cows in a herd are affected. Even when it is under control, there is usually around 10% of the herd that suffers from this illness. Ketosis reduces reproductive performance, reduces milk production and increases the risk of other metabolic illnesses. More specifically, ketosis is associated with:

  • 4 to 8 times higher risk of displaced abomasum1
  • A reduced conception rate2
  • An increase in the duration and severity of mastitis3

It is cheaper to prevent!

KETOLAB is a management tool that allows you to see the problems before they arise and take the necessary measures to correct the situation. Along with your veterinarian, your advisor will use your KETOLAB results to help you to revise your practices and reduce the risk of ketosis.
